January 7, 2001- What a Pain!
What's the best way to soothe sore muscles after a good workout? Experts recommend rest.
According to a recent study, aspirin, acetaminophen, or codeine may not have much effect on the delayed-onset muscle soreness caused by a hard workout. Muscles need about 48 hours to heal the microscopic tears that an intense workout can cause.  If further exercise is attempted before the soft tissues are healed, further irreversible damage can be done.

January 14, 2001- Cardio for Cholesterol
Want to improve your level of heart-protective HDL cholesterol? Focus on your cardio workout.
Low HDL-cholesterol levels may increase your risk of heart disease, but a recent study revealed that a regular cardiovascular workout could significantly increase HDL. While other types of workouts also have body benefits, study data revealed that only cardiovascular training, such as running or swimming, had the ability to increase HDL cholesterol.

January 21, 2001- Kiwi Vision
Is the fruit in your diet reducing your risk of cataracts? It may be if it's a kiwifruit.
Kiwifruit is loaded with vitamin C, an antioxidant that may minimize your risk of eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Researchers speculate that the vitamin may work by protecting the lens of your eye.
Getting the right amount of antioxidants and antioxidant vitamins C and E through diet or supplements can help with macular degeneration prevention.

January 28, 2001- A slick upper lip
Men are more likely to develop lip cancer than women. The reason: Women wear lipstick and most men don't.  To even the odds, use a lip balm with an SPF of 25 or higher when you spend long hours outside, says Joseph Bark, M.D., a dermatologist in Lexington, Kentucky. Here are our picks: Chap Stick Ultra and Natural Ice Extreme balm contain aloe and other softeners to prevent the sun-chapping that leads to bloody smiles. If you swim, use the water-resistant Blistex Ultra Protection. If applying lip balm makes you feel like a European escort, smear the fat Neutrogena Sunblock Stick all over your face, lips and all--just don't eat it. If you sprout a freckle or a thickened patch on your lips, see a doctor. That could be a sign of melanoma.
